Our Faculty

Wayne Freiman, Department Chair, Initiated the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program in 1968. Beginning with only twelve students, there are over one hundred enrolled in the two year daytime course of study, with hundreds who have graduated and are currently employed in the industry.

Because his father was a journeyman air conditioning mechanic, Mr. Freiman gained an education in the field at an early age; he was an electrician for a manufacturer at the age of 16, and was designing control systems for commercial and military use by the age of twenty. He received a degree from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, and a Masters Degree in Education from California Polytechnic University in Pomona. These schools support a philosophy of "learn by doing", a philosophy that has greatly influenced the method of instruction at Cypress College.

Ronald Trulock joined the Technology staff at Cypress in 1973. He brought to the program a background in project engineering, facilities management and construction engineering. Mr. Trulock's expertise in developing "hand-on" experiences has led to the development of one of the finest, most fully equipped air conditioning laboratories in the United States.

Mr. Trulock received an early education in the refrigeration industry while working with his father's refrigeration service and installation company. His exposure to commercial and industrial refrigeration systems led to his desire to extend his education in the industry. Graduating from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo with a degree in air conditioning and refrigeration engineering. He gained experience with steam plants and industrial systems as an engineering officer in the United States Navy. Later, as project engineer for a major mechanical contractor, he supervised the installation of power plants and industrial piping systems. Subsequently, he worked as a plant manager in high-rise office buildings.

Mr. Trulock has a Masters Degree in Education from California Polytechnic University in Pomona.

Douglas Sallade joined the staff at Cypress in 1995. His career has centered on engineering, project management, DDC controls and business management. Mr. Sallade has developed curriculum for the NEW Direct Digital Controls class, and resurrected the Pneumatic controls program previously offered at Cypress.

As with our other two instructors, Mr. Sallade was raised in the air conditioning and refrigeration business. His father operated a successful air conditioning contracting business and worked summers with his father from the age of 8. From age 16 he was managing various sized jobs for his fathers company. Mr. Sallade has come full cycle with this progam, he graduated from the Cypress program in 1979 and continued his education at California State University at San Luis Obispo, where he graduated with a degree in air conditioning and refrigeration engineering. He has worked for a number of supermarket and specialty refrigeration companies as a project and application engineer.

Mr. Sallade is currently working on his Masters degree in Multimedia Education from California State University at Pomona. He expects to be complete in the Fall quarter 2000 (if he can finish his final project!).
